Postdoctoral Scholar Position - Department of Defense-funded project: "IEC 2to4 - Facilitated Transition from 2-Year to 4-Year Engineering Studies"

We are inviting applications for a full-time postdoctoral scholar in the area of engineering education starting by the Fall of 2023. This position will work on the Department of Defense-funded project: “IEC 2to4 – Facilitated Transition from 2-Year to 4-Year Engineering Studies” The position will also work in support of research on underserved non-traditional undergraduate engineering students.  The initial appointment is for the academic year 2023-2024, with potential funding for an additional appointment in academic year 2024-25.

Across both positions, this position will be largely focused on gathering data and managing research assignments associated with underserved and/or non-traditional students. These include students who attend community colleges as well as those who attend four-year engineering institutions. The projects will involve qualitative data collection through interviews, focus groups, and/or participant observations. In addition, the position will be responsible for quantitative research by way of institutional data sets.

The selected candidate will be responsible for mentoring and supervision of graduate research assistants, who will also be supporting data collection and analysis. In addition, the position will include project management and logistical duties, including ensuring that data is collected, stored, and analyzed in a timely manner. The postdoctoral scholar will also work with the principal investigator to manage other deliverables, including annual reports due to funding agencies. To that end, the scholar will receive multiple opportunities to co-author peer-reviewed journal and conference publications, which will be completed alongside annual reports. In addition, the scholar will have opportunities to learn about the grant proposal process.

This position will be mentored and supervised by Dr. Bruk Berhane at Florida International University (FIU) and supported by local engineering education communities at FIU (e.g., STEM Transformation Institute). This position will also receive co-mentoring from Dr. Stephen Secules at FIU.

Minimum qualifications:

● Ph.D. in an Engineering or other STEM field, a STEM Education field, or a Ph.D. in Education

● Experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research 

● Motivation and ability to engage with diverse students (both undergraduate and graduate)  and junior/senior researchers from other institutions

● Capacity and willingness to build strong and effective relationships with stakeholders, including community colleges, four-year minority-serving institutions, and other four-year universities.

                                                 Postdoctoral Scholar Position - Equity Research Group

Dr. Stephen Secules is inviting applications for a full-time postdoctoral scholar focused on equity in engineering education. The postdoc will join the Equity Research Group at Florida International University to primarily work on a new NSF-funded grant project on racial equity in engineering education. Based on currently available funding the maximum term of employment will likely be from November 2023 through July 2025. The project will involve in situ observations at local South Florida universities with contrasting demographic and institutional characteristics.The postdoc will be centrally involved in all aspects of the new grant project, including data collection, analysis, publication, and educational event planning. Data collection will include observations in engineering classrooms and one-on-one interview and group engagement with faculty. Educational events will include a symposium on racial equity, training for early career researchers on action-oriented research, and a theatre-based professional development for faculty. There will be significant opportunities to co-author on a rich dataset regarding equity in engineering classrooms and to mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers in the Equity Research Group.

  • Experience in qualitative education research

  • Willingness to conduct research locally in South Florida

Additional useful (but not required) qualifications include:

Undergraduate Student Research Assistant

The School of Universal Computing, Construction, and Engineering Education is currently seeking undergraduate research assistants to join its exciting team of scholars.  Broadly speaking, SUCCEED faculty aim to 1) Identify and analyze ideal practices in engineering and computing education across the K-20 continuum; 2) Research strategies for improving diversity, equity, and inclusion, and 3) Understand the process for engaging all engineering and computing education stakeholders (e.g., industry, families, and teachers).  Undergraduate research assistants will support a project related to one or more of these themes.

 Duties may include the following:

  • Assist in conducting research, developing experimental protocols, and entering data in databases
  • Monitor collected instruments/forms for completion and accuracy
  • Schedule appointments and follow-ups with the participant(s)
  • Analyze study data, and attend staff meetings to review data
  • Conduct extensive literature reviews
  • Perform other related duties as required or as directed; the omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position

  • FIU undergraduate student, currently working towards Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, computing, or another STEM field

Student Program Assistant - Federal Work-Study Only

The student program assistant will be responsible for researching information pertinent to the success of the BS in interdisciplinary engineering, as well as the Ph.D. in engineering and computing education  This position will be housed in the School of Universal Computing, Construction, and Engineering Education in the College of Engineering and Computing  The office assistant will report to the Senior Program Coordinator for SUCCEED  This position will be situated in an office environment and requires the ability to work independently, research information critical to the successful execution of both programs and communicate effectively with stakeholders in SUCCEED and throughout the college  

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Identifying course requirements for required courses in the BS and Ph.D. programs
  • Researching the names of instructors associated with undergraduate coursework in the BS program
  • Communicating with SUCCEED faculty and staff about updates 
  • Reviewing information about similar course offerings in similar BS and Ph.D. programs at other universities 
  • Reporting findings from research and reviews in a coherent and cohesive manner, with minimal errors
  • Assisting in the scheduling of meetings, conference calls, etc
  • Supporting the logistical arrangements for faculty visits and other SUCCEED events
  • Updating and maintaining the social media and website for SUCCEED
  • Perform other related duties as required or as directed; the omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position

 Who May Apply

Students enrolled at FIU, who have been awarded Federal Work-Study (FWS) as part of their Financial Aid Award package.

Students must be enrolled with a minimum of six (6) credit hours in a course of study leading to a degree or a Financial Aid eligible certificate, during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.

Upon graduating, FWS employment must end.
